Another half-year of life expectancy gained between 2003 and 2004

The latest data service Demographics Federal Public Service Economy show that life expectancy in our country still has significant increased between 2003 and 2004, from 78.82 to 79.47 years. In ten years there has even increased by more than two full years in this regard (from 77.35 years in 1995 to 79.47 years in 2004). That of males increased from 75.85 to 76.47 years and women increased from 81.69 to 82.36 years.
Again Belgium is a two tier is to be seen as the life expectancy of citizens Flemish (80.27 years) is greater than two years of the Walloon average (78.04 years), ranging Brussels closer to the figures of the north, with 79.37 years.
There are incidentally a progressive decrease in the gap between men and women (from 6.82 years in 1995 to 5.89 years in 2004).

Doctor Internet will never replace the doctor

In our time, patients are deemed to be most critical and information seekers. But research published on Health Expectations dismantle this belief more widespread in the medical world (Pharm MK et al. Health Expectations 2006; 9: 174-87 .) Patients certainly have thirst for information and written sources, but they are unable to get them alone, and the proliferation of information sources (print and Internet) is not enough to make patients independent in managing their disease or their treatment. Only a small proportion of patients from an intellectual level and sociocultural level is able to understand medical prescriptions and exercise of critical thinking in relation to information from a source other than their doctor contractor.
The majority of patients still depends on the medical information provided by physicians. Internet or the media can never replace the doctor-patient relationship, which remains essential to help the patient understand correctly its pathology and management thereof. Doctor patient communication should always be regarded as a fundamental priority and essential.

tax on airline tickets in 14 countries in the fight against AIDS, malaria and TB

President Chirac has managed to rally in thirteen countries in more than France to project close to his heart since the beginning of its last electoral mandate in 2002 to tax airline tickets to finance the purchase of drugs against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, reports Le Figaro . The thirteen other countries are Brazil, Chile, Cyprus, Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Norway and the United Kingdom. This initiative falls within the broader framework of UNITAID, an initiative to buy low cost drugs against these diseases, which was launched earlier this month at the UN conference AIDS. In total, 43 countries participate in UNITAID.

The debate on the legalization of euthanasia in the United Kingdom comes alive

A former professor of ethics British calls for the legalization of euthanasia, at least passively, even unintentionally. Len Doyal, a member of the ethics committee of the British Medical Association, one must indeed be able to legalize a practice widely applied in the field, including for patients incapable of giving consent. As for the British Medical Association, she has recently abandoned its ancient opposition to any form of legalization euthanasia, to take a qualified neutral in this debate.

Three days of antibiotics for pneumonia in general practice? (BMJ)

administration of antibiotics for 3 days is equally effective for treating community-acquired pneumonia than traditional treatments 7 to 10 days and could help reduce antimicrobial resistance, el Moussaoui et al conclude, authors a Dutch study of 119 patients using amoxycillin and published in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ 2006; 332: 1355 ).

In a game of football with new shoes in toxic shock (BMJ)

This is particularly strange that both cases show Taylor et al
authors published in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ 2006; 332: 1376). These two cases of toxic shock syndrome in young people who played football with brand new shoes and having thus developed the "blistering". These blisters contained Staphylococcus aureus, hence the above complication.

ladies but little often infrequent Gentlemen ...

Women should drink little and often, while men could drink a greater quantity but markedly less frequent. According to researchers, the cardiovascular risk in humans would be proportional to the frequency of consumption, while among women it is the amount of alcohol increases the risk. It may be objected this study, which was based on a diary kept by consumer participants, this methodological bias. But it confirms if need be that women are not like other men.

Full moon nights?

A survey published in the Journal of Sleep Research conducted by researchers at the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, University of Bern (Switzerland) seems to show that sleep is less restful nights during the full moon. The full moon would not sleep because of tiredness and fatigue with recovery awakening. In addition, during the full moon nights, sleep duration is shortened, whereas in new moon phase we would sleep longer. But the authors are careful to state in their conclusions that these findings require additional studies to be validated.

Eating healthy is good, ethical eating is better

Eating healthy is good. But you can eat healthier than eating healthy ethics. That's what looked a consumer group, representatives of science and representatives of national institutions and community after a meeting held by the EU in Brussels at the initiative of Coldiretti entitled "Food future of the European Union: safety and market." Guaranteeing food safety, transparency of information on their quality and background checks but also on socio-environmental standards to avoid putting on sale of products obtained by degrading the surrounding or exploiting people: these are the priorities that should meet the European Union. One thinks of the flowers grown in Kenya, using unauthorized pesticides and depriving local populations of water. It evokes tomatoes according to a Chinese accusation by the group Human Rights in China are grown by inmates sentenced to hard labor.

READ IN GUNAIKEIA Vol. 10 N ° 10 - Which women with stress urinary incontinence will benefit from a workout of the pelvic floor?

Hendrik Cammu Michelle Van Nylen, Christophe Blockeel, Leon Kaufman, Jean-Jacques Amy
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, AZ VUB, Brussels

Urinary incontinence is a very common problem, encountered in at least 14% of women over 30 years (1). The International Continence Society defines urinary incontinence as the involuntary discharge of urine through the urethra simultaneously to an increase in intra-abdominal pressure (2). Urinary incontinence often has a negative impact on the daily lives of women (3) and it rarely improves spontaneously (4). The SUI is conventionally treated in two ways: firstly, there are many surgical correction of the closure mechanism of the urethra and on the other hand, it yal'entraînement pelvic floor muscle. These exercises have an effect on incontinence because they support the urethra and bladder neck indirectly because of their entanglement with the endopelvic fascia (5).

Drugs: a very serious turn of the screw across the Channel

The British government will strengthen the crackdown on drugs in all genera. Users caught with five ecstasy tablets or five grams of cannabis - enough for ten joints - will be prosecuted as drug dealer, reports the Guardian. Possession of ten joints could therefore lead to 14 years in prison, "adds the BBC. It is a complete break looming and with measures taken previously. 18 months ago, in fact, some liberalization posed that the possession of cannabis would expose more than a confiscation and a formal warning. The Advisory Committee questioned before the new measures calls him, a threshold of 28g - 5g and not - for possession of cannabis.

The Netherlands wants to prevent the flight of foreign doctors in the country

Several parties have asked the Dutch Minister to find solutions to prevent the flight of foreign doctors, particularly refugees, to other lands, including to Germany or England, for fear of precipitating a real shortage. Regularization procedures are so lengthy and painful that the doctors did not find adequate work, reports HuisartsVandaag.nl. Minister Hoogervorst, while refusing to draw a conclusion as dark, seems determined to improve this situation.

1,500 doctors and nurses (s) Flemish fled to the Netherlands in five years

Unlike the potential movement described above, some 1,500 nurses (s) and Flemish doctors have left Belgium to settle in the Netherlands during the past five years, reports De Morgen .

Dutch doctors do they do as they please?

Physicians apply the recommendations as well partially, resulting in considerable differences in behavior between them, reports Zorgvisie.nl . And the addition of new guidelines do not change much. It is diagnosed by a Dutch professor who teaches the quality of general medical care and hospital at the University of Tilburg.

A committee of the House of Lords attack the ban on smoking in public

The ban on smoking in public places, including pubs and private clubs, voted by an overwhelming majority of British MPs, is not justified by the risks of passive smoking. It must declare that estimated that the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, which specifically criticized the parliamentarians to have overlooked the fact that passive smoking has especially its ravages among the four walls of houses.

The origin of macular degeneration age-related searching in the plates?

The origin of the loss of central vision associated age (AMD) could be partially related to the quality of dietary carbohydrates. This is suggested by the work of Chiu et al, the authors published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr 2006; 83: 880), based on the analysis of a subgroup of the famous Nurses' Health Study, enrolled in the program 'Nutrition and Vision'. The authors insist that the quality of carbohydrates as well as their quantity plays an important role in this regard. It turns out that women with a diet with high glycemic index have an increased risk of developing macular degeneration related to age.

An orange juice or grapefruit at breakfast 'against osteoporosis

An experiment conducted on laboratory rats showed that daily administration of orange juice or grapefruit juice helps prevent Osteoporosis, a disease that currently affects some 2 million men and 8 million women in the United States. This is shown in a study by researchers at the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center Texas A & M University published in the Journal of Nutrition .

Further Studies = less tendency to smoke

Americans who have completed their secondary education were 26% less likely to smoke than those who did not arrive. This is shown Kenkel et al (Cornell University), authors of a study published in the Journal of Labor Economics (2006; 24: 3) and based on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1979. This effect is true both among women than among men. By cons in terms of another parameter studied, namely obesity, it does not show any convincing relationship with the study completed.

breathing exercises can reduce the use of inhalers in asthma light

breathing techniques can reduce the use of inhalers in acute over 80%, and reduce by half those made for treatment background in mild asthma, conclude Slader et al, authors of a study published online by Thorax .

HPV vaccine effective also at vulvar and vaginal

Gardasil, the new HPV vaccine awaiting the final green light from the FDA, appears to be 100% effective not only in protecting against cervical cancer, but also against vaginal and vulvar lesions related to HPV. This was exposed Paavonen et al at the annual meeting of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in Atlanta.

Physics "Negroid" twice as likely to suffer the death penalty

The ethnic characteristics play a role of importance that it's hard to imagine in the judiciary in the United States. The journal Psychological Science (2006; 17: 383) published a study on the effect of a research group from Stanford University showing that among African-American accused of murder against a white, those who have "bad luck" d having traits more "Negroid" are twice as likely to be sentenced to death. This finding disappears when blacks are accused of the killing of another Afro-American.

Establishment of a universal health insurance in Massachusetts

Massassuchetts The state is currently setting up a system of health insurance Universal, which is - in a context such as the United States - a huge challenge. But it will not be an assured future for all, as the Boston Globe reported monthly premiums ranging from 30 to 140 dollars for most low-income citizens of the state. The government will still take them into account all of the premium for those falling below the federal poverty level (or 9,800 dollars per year for a single) and will assume some of the people located in areas of intermediate income.

Genentech, the company where Americans like work

The American magazine Fortune publishes an annual list of 100 companies for which we prefer to work. It is the biotech company Genentech, located in South San Francisco, who wins this year. Let us come to a hospital in Connecticut's fourth place ranking.

De Charleroi in Washington, small gifts for politicians

A detailed study on the travel of members of Congress shows that U.S. legislators have agreed to an estimated $ 50 million in travel offered by companies and groups seeking legislative favors between 2000 and 2005, reports the Washington Post . The Center for Public Integrity has published a list of eleven members of Congress who have surpassed the $ 350,000 and not without humor, he calls the 'frequent flyers'. Both are Democrats and nine Republicans.

boom cancer drugs

new drugs against cancer should flood the market. It is predicted that both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal . If biotech companies like Genentech and ImClone have been talking a lot of them these recent years with so-called targeted drugs, this year sees, according to the NYT, the advent of the large pharmaceutical companies in the field of targeted drugs. And noted that some 400 cancer drugs from 178 companies are currently in clinical trials, which is twice the number recorded for drugs against Alzheimer's and depression and even almost three times the number of products against the infarction and stroke.

Tobacco kill you your child

paternal smoking before conception is associated with an increased risk Acute myeloid leukemia in children, but this risk is even greater if the paternal smoking before conception is associated with maternal smoking post-conception or passive exposure of children to smoking after birth, and conclude Chang al, the authors of a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology ( 2006; 163: 1091).

Early Revascularization with infarction with cardiogenic shock

A study by Hochman et al, including Col. Jacques (UCL), for the SHOCK investigators and published in the JAMA (2006; 295: 2511), shows that nearly two thirds of survivors after hospitalization with cardiogenic shock treated with early revascularization were alive six years later. Such a strategy leads to an absolute improvement of 13.2% and 67% relative survival at six years compared to patients who have conducted a medical stabilization. Therefore, early revascularization should be applied in patients with myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock on left ventricular failure.

Coffee is he saying yes?

Researchers have interviewed people about their views on voluntary euthanasia before and after drinking orange juice with caffeine (or placebo added).

Thalidomide significantly increases survival in multiple myeloma

Thalidomide improves by nearly two-year survival for over 70 years with multiple myeloma, writes the French daily Liberation, echoing a presentation by French researchers at the annual meeting of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in Atlanta. It is hardly worth remembering no doubt that thalidomide also used successfully in the treatment of leprosy, was formerly known here by its trade name at the time, Softenon and thus represents a milestone in the Development of pharmacovigilance.

The traditional evaluation of literature questioning

The editors and publishers various publications of the American Public Library of Science (PLoS) have not only somewhat revolutionized the publishing industry and medical science through the introduction of free access, but they seem almost out of questioning. The editorial team PLoS Medicine publishes in its latest edition a text questioning techniques for evaluating the scientific literature ( PLoS Med 2006; 3: E291). The impact factor, the cornerstone of this evaluation is a very limited to assess the true impact of a given publication in a magazine, they write.

A fine of two million euros per day for Microsoft in July?

Brussels will decide in July on new sanctions against Microsoft.
The Commission may require 2 million euros per day for non-implementation of measures introduced in 2004 by European competition authorities, reports the French business daily Les Echos .

Minivans, 4x4 and trucks increased risk for children

A child up to 2.5 times more likely to be hit by a minivan, a 4x4 truck or a car. In addition, a child hit by one of these vehicles may well be more seriously injured by an ordinary car. This is shown in a U.S. study conducted in Utah on children under 10 years between 1998 and 2003 and published in Pediatric Emergency Care.

Somalia (medical) Apocalypse now!

a time when the Somali capital has just fallen into the hands of militias of "Islamic courts", HuisartsVandaag.nl paints a bleak picture of healthcare in this country torn apart by 15 years bloody war. The country has no government that governs, no laws, no infrastructure and virtually no healthcare. People often have to travel hundreds of miles to seek treatment. There is no public health infrastructure and medical facilities were looted or destroyed. As for the medical population is characterized by a staggering shortage: four doctors, 28 nurses (s) and midwives per 100,000 inhabitants. One in ten children die at birth, a quarter died before age 5.

Yoga to get radiotherapy

Women who attend yoga classes for two hours per week generally feel healthier during radiation treatment for breast cancer. This was explained at the ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, director of the Integrative Medicine Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston.
