A careful reader, Mr. Filip Destrijker, we noted that 136,400 cancer deaths Netherlands in 2005 (MDL No. 351, May 30, 2006), a figure advanced by a Dutch medical site, it seems very excessive. This is actually almost total mortality in the Netherlands. The number of deaths due to cancer a few years it has fluctuated around 37,000 per year. We apologize to our readers for this error.

The Flemish Council wants women to the College of Physicians
Punishment apparently struck a moderate psychiatrist expert convicted of raping seven patients who had sentenced "only" a year of suspension has caused a lot of outrage in the public and particularly the side of Vrouwenraad (Council of Women), reports De Standaard. For this organization a professional disqualification required in such cases. The Vrouwenraad also calls being medical professional is considered an aggravating circumstance in cases of sexual abuse.
be added to us that Vincent Martin it is also very well drawn in the ordinary courts. Side of the Order is made out rather than a year's suspension is actually a very severe punishment, because it's almost the end of a career that means. We return to this issue in a future edition of Medi-Sphere.
The UN will publish a declaration, already challenged on AIDS, but Kofi Annan himself, appears dark
A thousand activists have conducted intense lobbying by delegates from the last conference of UN on AIDS to the international organization that publishes a strong statement on terrorism. The draft text, which should be adopted by the General Assembly, Calls on Member States to concentrate their efforts to ensure universal access to treatment by 2010, reports the BBC. To Secretary General Kofi Annan, it is unfortunate that this document is little more precise, but activists above, them, still mourn the Tagus Davan and emphasize in particular the absence of any reference to homosexuals, prostitute (s) and addicts. Coordinator of ActionAid International, always cited by the BBC, said his organization is simply " furious." Such weakness is
incomprhénsible at a time when 8,500 people a day die of AIDS and where 13,500 new infections are recorded daily.
Peter Piot, head of UNAIDS, also often cited as a possible successor to Lee Jong-wook, the late WHO director, says he, however, that this statement is stronger than all previous.
At the closing session of the UN special devoted to AIDS, "notes New York Times Annan has shown, however, much darker. The epidemic continues to outrun our efforts to, "said Secretary General of the UN, with more infections and more deaths than ever. Certainly there is some progress, as increasing the number of people with access to treatment and the decline of the disease in some African countries, but if some countries do not overdrive, we can no longer turn the tide. Kofi Annan's tone contrasted with the optimism seriously by political leaders during this session, further notes the NYT.
The liberal policy of the Swiss vis-à-vis hard drugs seems effective (Lancet)
A study Nordt and Stohler, published in The Lancet ( 2006; 367: 1830) shows that the liberal policy in Zurich vis-à-vis the hard drugs, including the provision of substitution treatment with methadone or buprenorphine has led to a decrease in the number of new addicts. And the decline in question was not thin, as this is a decrease of 850 new customers in 1990 to 150 in 2002. And the authors conclude, this policy and the emphasis on the medicalization of the problem of heroin appear to have contributed to the image of it unattractive for young people.
The number of uninsured people in health care is increasing in the Netherlands
Follow fluctuation in the number of people without health care insurance is a constant occupation for those who follow the news on the subject in the United States. But the Netherlands also are confronted with a more modest scale of course, to this phenomenon. This year the number of uninsured people increased by about 20%, reaching 280,000 units, reports the Algemeen Dagblad. The increase is however still limited by the fact that one is obliged to ensure.
Amsterdam hospital auctioned
A hospital in Amsterdam, Slotervaartziekenhuis, which is negotiating for several weeks for his redemption with a consortium hospital for his redemption, should open the proceedings by a tender open to other potential buyers. That's what comes, informs Zorgvisie.nl , an independent commission to decide, but accompanying the negotiations on behalf of the Department of Public Health.
The TV is dangerous for small
Besides the sometimes stultifying certain programs, the TV is a danger to children. We'd better tell the TV, because that is falling devices on the bodies of children is sometimes a problem, write and Ota al (Dallas), authors of a study published in Academic Emergency Medicine (Acad Emerg Med 2006; 13: 700) and on 26 cases identified during the year. A fibrinolytic
in cardiac arrest unrecoverable
A U.S. study of Bozeman et al, conducted in three emergency services and to be published in Resuscitation shows that the administration of tenecteplase, a fibrinolytic, after the failure of resuscitation classical, increases the frequency of restarts of spontaneous circulation and short-term survival with good neurological function. In the study, 26 of the 50 patients concerned were able to be recovered.
IVF: no problems for thirty advanced
Transferring one embryo during IVF is just as likely to result in pregnancy and childbirth in women living 36 to 39 years than among younger women, conclude Veleva et al (Finland), authors of a study published in Human Reproduction ( 2006, doi: 10.1093/del 137). We knew the technique of IVF with single embryo transfer was effective in women under 35 years.

Letter Academy of Pediatrics Minister Demotte (1-6-2006)
(full text)
Sir,
A delegation appointed by the Belgian Academy of Pediatrics, which represents all Belgian paediatricians met the May 30, 2006 in your office and Ms. Heusden Mr. Vermylen. We expressed our analysis of the draft Royal Decree on the pediatric care program, you will receive this detailed analysis in the coming days under separate cover. In this interview, we expressed the loss of confidence worldwide Pediatric about your ministry and the intensity of his deep unhappiness. We can not accept excuses, broken promises and the series of proposals that you do so deleterious that the situation of pediatric services is increasingly critical that we announced this a long time.
Regarding the draft royal decree on the plan of care, you've invited in 2004 to participate in its elaboration. Professor Kips showed his support to amend the text in the light of our criticism. Since then, we have not been informed of the outcome of the case and the latest version of the project was provided by the hospital managers. There was no dialogue but a manipulation. We seek to attract more difficulty with paediatricians in hospitals despite underfunding and lack of candidates for an answer, you increase the administrative burden, the medico-legal liability and obligations of presence. We must give priority to financial incentives and improved working conditions if not the best laws are unenforceable.
We demand a clear commitment to a rapid appreciation of our business. An increase of 100% of supervision fees in the first 5 days service E was deemed indispensable in order to finance a pediatrician additional service. This application was considered by the médicomut and increased 25% has been granted and entered into the agreement to 2006. We waited in vain for the coming into force in February. The publication took place with 3 months late and was granted retroactive to geriatricians and not pediatricians. This is an intolerable discrimination which, given the peak of winter activity, we lose almost half of the budget promised in 2006.
We demand the recovery of these budgets have been forfeited and the award without delay the remaining 75%.
Removing extra fees for accompanied children staying in single room for non-medical reasons was seen as a stab in the back. It is indeed a new discrimination at the expense of the lowest paid physicians. Supplements can represent up to 30% of the fees for some services. We stand fully the possibility that every parent has the opportunity to stay with her hospitalized child, regardless of room type. But if some parents, who almost always agrees hospitalization insurance, choose a private room for their comfort, there is no reason that the hospital doctor in charge is less well treated because he cares for a child.
Pediatrics is treated unfairly discriminatory and a feeling of discontent has spread to hospital paediatricians. We can no longer pursue a constructive dialogue if current conditions are not changed drastically. We are determined to initiate the necessary actions to defend the medicine of the child. The Belgian Academy of Pediatrics has therefore decided on a first strike action on 16 June 2006. Although
support children and their families (both the physical and psychological), by competent teams (thus motivated staffées in number and well trained), can only reduce the risk of disease in adults ((asthma, obesity, learning disability, health education, prevention, medicine ....). Investing for Children you can save on adult medicine without risk of reducing the quality thereof. It is also to show foresight and anticipation and not a grandstanding with no prospect of the public good.
We believe, Sir that you will be receptive to our arguments and will give a positive response as soon as possible. Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of all our consideration.
Drs A. Barillari, president of the Academy, Y. Louis (Absym), Mr. Pletincx (GBS), Ph. Alliet (VVK), Alexander (Gbps), OC Matthys (BVK-SBP) and Prof. P. Casa (University Diensthoofden Pediatrics)
